The Sensex fell 1,048 points to close at 80,234, while the Nifty 50 declined 313 points to settle at 24,866, slipping below the 24,900 mark.
Markets witnessed sharp intra-day swings, with the Nifty rebounding nearly 250 points from the day’s low. The India VIX surged nearly 25% as risk sentiment deteriorated.
The midcap index was particularly volatile, swinging nearly 2,100 points during the session before closing 935 points lower at 58,181. Nifty Bank dropped 689 points to end at 59,840.
Market breadth remained firmly negative, with the NSE advance-decline ratio at 1:6. As many as 28 of the 30 Sensex constituents ended in the red, while 42 out of 50 Nifty stocks closed lower.
IndiGo, L&T, Adani Ports and Maruti Suzuki were among the top losers.
Sectorally, barring defence, metals and healthcare, all other indices ended lower.
